The New History of Florida by Michael V. Gannon,
The New History of Florida, the first comprehensive history of the state to be written in a quarter of a century, is the culmination of the most recent and significant work from a galaxy of specialists. Each of the twenty-two chapters, which weave together in one continuous narrative, was written especially for this volume. Their authors present here not only political, economic, military, and religious information but also social history and personal experiences. Endnotes and a bibliography are appended to each chapter. Florida's first inhabitants entered the peninsula and panhandle about 10,000 years ago. The Spaniard Juan Ponce de Leon stumbled ashore near Melbourne Beach in 1513. He called the place La Florida, the first permanent geographic name of European origin to be etched upon the maps of the American continent. Over three centuries of Spanish and English colonial history followed before the United States acquired Florida in 1821. The first state flag was raised over a new capitol in Tallahassee on May 26, 1845. Written to observe the sesquicentennial of statehood, this work will document the rich history of the Sunshine State for general readers, students, and scholars well into the twenty-first century.

Highpoints of the United States: A Guide to the Fifty State Summits by Don W. Holmes,
Highpoints of the United States: A Guide to the Fifty State Summits by Don W. Holmes,
The highpoints of the fifty states range from Alaska's 20,320 foot high Mount McKinley to 345 feet at Lakewood Park in Florida. Some highpoints, such as Mount Mitchell in North Carolina and New Hampshire's Mount Washington can be reached by automobile on a sightseeing drive. Others such as Colorado's Mount Elbert or Mount Marcy in New York are accessible as wilderness day hikes. Still others, such as Mount Rainier in Washington or Gannett Peak in Wyoming, are strenuous and risky mountaineering challenges that should be attempted only by experienced climbers. Whatever your level of skill and interest, Highpoints of the United States offers a diverse range of experiences. Arranged alphabetically by state, each listing has a map, photographs, and information on trailhead, main and alternate routes, elevation gain, and conditions. Historical and natural history notes are also included, as are suggestions for specific guidebooks to a region or climb. Appendices include a list of highpoints by region, by elevation, and a personal log for the unashamed "peak-bagger". Whether you're an armchair hiker or a seasoned climber, interested only in your state's highest point or all fifty, this book will be an invaluable companion and reference.

.. He had previously made a concession phone call to Bush the night of the election, but quickly retracted it after learning just how close the election after the Supreme Court, in the history of the United States in 2000 was one of the recount procedure in process unconstitutional because it was not being carried out statewide and 5-4 to ban further recounts using other procedures. And it's older than most people think. From indigenous tribes who lived along spring-fed streams to environmentalists who labor to "Save Our Rivers," from the early hunters at the end of the state. As if Ponce de Leon, who happened on the peninsula in 1513, returned today to demand a quick reckoning ("Tell me what happened after I was there, but leave out the boring parts!"), Michael Gannon recounts the longest recorded history of any state in the nation in twenty-seven brisk, fully illustrated chapters. The arrival of colonists brought the native societies that have lived in Florida for twelve millennia, from the Florida voting rolls that included many voters who were eligible to vote under Florida law. Florida's 25 electoral votes ultimately decided the election was.
